Nature and Trekking
Walking in the garden of Tuscany, among mountain flavours and scents in San Romano in Garfagnana
5 days to discover the territory of San Romano in Garfagnana and its most evocative and authentic corners, immersed in the history, nature and traditions of this land.
From a castle that still lives – the Verrucole Fortress – to the Orecchiella Natural Park, among the rocks of the Apuan Alps and the beech woods of the Tuscan Apennines.
- The castle of the Fortezza, founded by the Gherardinghi family over an earlier human settlement, dates back to between the 10th and 13th centuries. Medieval tradition lives on in the castle, where a guide in costume will lead us to discover its secrets.
- We move together towards the protected natural area of the Orecchiella Park, for a walk to discover the “Sentiero degli Orsi” (Bear Path) and the typical flora of these mountain areas.
Programme
In the early afternoon arrival in Garfagnana, by own means. Meeting with the guide in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana where the tour starts. Check-In. Accommodation in the reserved rooms. Presentation of the programme by one of our representatives. Typical “Garfagnana” dinner with a tasting of local cuisine. Return to the hotel. Overnight stay.
We take the 9:35 train from Castelnuovo di Garfagnana to the Piazza al Serchio railway station for a walk, accompanied by a guide, following the ancient route of the Via del Volto Santo, (a route that in the Middle Ages joined the cities of Pontremoli and Lucca), crossing the territory of San Romano in Garfagnana with destination Villetta covering a distance of about 14.5 km. A succession of paths and mule tracks wind through magnificent views of the Apuan Alps, the Apennines and ancient villages where history and traditions live on. The Via del Volto Santo route crosses Lunigiana and Garfagnana, which, although very different from each other, share historical, landscape, anthropological and geographical elements. It does not present any difficulties to be noted but can be undertaken by those with a good inclination to walk.
We will stop at the:
- the mighty Verrucole Fortress;
- Sambuca rock church.
The majestic and superb Fortezza delle Verrucole is one of the most beautiful examples of a Tuscan medieval castle and one of the most successful examples of conservative restoration. Already in the distance its walls, with their almost perfectly intact battlements, seem to command the passer-by to pay homage to its power. As we drive the few hundred metres from the village, where we have to leave the car, to the castle, we realise what can await us once we reach the top: a breathtaking view of the entire surrounding area. We enter the inner courtyard of the fortress walls to learn about the Archeo Park: a “living” museum offering historical reconstructions.
Lunch Box.
In the afternoon we will visit the historical centre of San Romano in Garfagnana, with its narrow cobbled streets. Along the way we will make a stop at the mill located almost contemplating the landscape where the protagonist is him!!! The IGP spelt of Garfagnana! The view is breathtaking. In front of us, a long expanse of slightly steep fields and a small plot of land used for the cultivation of spelt. Passion for their land, love of nature and respect for the traditions of our mountains distinguish this production.
We will visit
- The spelt processing plant;
- The fruit processing plant for transformation into jam;
- The mill.
Amongst other things, we will see some of the stages in the processing of the flours, which are milled in the factory using a stone mill powered by solar energy: maize flour, spelt flour, wheat flour, with the possibility of purchasing the products carefully harvested, selected and processed in the best possible way to ensure a unique taste on your table. Because everything is cultivated as it once was, using totally natural methods.
Our journey will continue by passing through a beautiful and skilfully maintained village: Sambuca whose church, dedicated to San Pantaleone, stands on a spur of rock with which it forms a single unit. After crossing the bridge over the Serchio river called “della Villetta” we arrive at the Villetta – San Romano railway station.
With the 18:11 or 18:55 train we quickly return to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Dinner in a tavern. Return to the hotel. Overnight stay.
Breakfast. In the morning at school of… cheese! “From the stable to the table“. A journey that will take you to the heart of cheese production (from the arrival of the milk to the maturing process). You will discover how milk becomes cheese.
The producer will open the doors of the dairy and show you the cheese-making process. Tasting and possibility of purchasing the products. Move on to the Selva Buffardello adventure park, located in the territory of the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Tosco Emiliano. Inside the park it is possible to take part in various activities, to spend half a day immersed in nature, dedicated to sport, fun and adventure. Acrobatic paths, excursions, trail running and educational activities are just some of the activities on offer, organised and managed by highly qualified staff. Access to the park is free for those who do not take part in the activities. Lunch Box, for lunch. Return to the hotel. Dinner. Overnight stay.
Lunch Box, for lunch. Entire day to discover the Orecchiella Park: a protected natural area that is part of the Parco Nazionale Appennino Tosco Emiliano. The park is organised and divided into three nature reserves: Orecchiella, Pania di Corfino and Lama Rossa. The Visitor’s Centre of the Reserve houses the nature museum and the museum of birds of prey. The park also contains a mountain garden with many flowers and plants typical of mountain environments. There are, in fact, annual or perennial herbaceous, tree and shrub species typical of the Apennine habitat. A magnificent territory rich in unique environments and populated by an incredible biodiversity. Our excursion begins along paths through majestic beech forests and magnificent views. We climb up to the Lamarossa peat bog, home to relict botanical species that have come down to us since the last glaciations. We continue on our way to the large alpine pastures where shepherds still lead their herds. From here, we gently walk up the meadows to the surprise. Suddenly the forest ends and we are on the gentle summit of Pania di Corfino. Below us is a vertiginous rocky leap and in front of us all the Apuan Alps and the entire Serchio valley. Pania di Corfino is 1603 metres high and thanks to its position is considered the terrace of the Garfagnana. From here you can see everything and it is the perfect place to end our emotional journey in this green valley and its mountains. Return to the hotel. Dinner. Overnight stay.
